Shrine of Saint Mary of Remete

Shrine in Remete is a refuge for many pilgrims. Viceroys, district prefects, bishops, priests, monks and the Christ’s faithful went on a pilgrimage there. During their bishoprics, Borković and Emerik Esterhazy, the bishops of Zagreb, went on a pilgrimage to Remete every Saturday.

Archbishop Bauer, cardinals Stepinac and Kuharić frequently went on pilgrimages to Remete and pilgrims from Zagreb, led by their shepherds, came to the shrine in the hard times of Croatian history. Many miracles took place in the shrine of Saint Mary of Remete when pilgrims sought Mary’s help.

Records of those miracles were destroyed in a fire, leaving only Farmacopea celestis, written by Andrija Eggerer, and Liber votorum. Unlike the shrines in Marija Bistrica, Sinj and Trsat which are visited by many pilgrims, Remete is a shrine of intimacy and peace.

The shrine is almost never empty. It is open all day long and sometimes a car stops by. People do not wish to be noticed and wish to pray in silence before the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Traditional parish fête days are Easter Monday, Monday after the Feast of the Pentecost, Feast of the Assumption of Mary and the Feast of the Nativity of Mary.

Big pilgrimages ceased in the fifties of the 20th century as the traditional days, Easter Monday and Monday after the Feast of the Pentecost became weekdays (working days) so people had to go to work. New guardians of the shrine, Carmelites, wish to be at disposal to pilgrims as much as possible and make efforts to keep Remete a place of prayer, just like when the Pauline brother were guardians of the shrine,  and not an excursion site.

The Carmelites wish to keep Remete an oasis of peace and prayer as this shrine originated from prayer and this shrine consists of prayer.
